  27. Well, one thing I've found is that the "me" built into gulam has difficulties
  28. with large files (>100K or so). I've found microemacs to be considerably more
  29. reliable - and faster.

  49. Not only were the colors on my previous and present color 1224 mintors
  50. different enough to require changing all my control panel settings on
  51. all disks but also the maximum volumes on my new 1224 and 124 monitors are
  52. worlds apart....

  54. The mono can be barely heard while the color one's beeps arealmost clanks
  55. at max volume!

  68. Anyone in Netland have any experience with Fax for the ST? One of my
  69.  students asked if he could submit an assignment by Fax, so I guess
  70.  I have to start taking this seriously.

  72. Rather than buy a stand-alone fax machine, it seems to make sense, for the
  73.  limited occasions I'll be using it, to use a computer based fax card and
  74.  external scanner. That way, the scanner could be used for desktop
  75.  publishing as well.

  77. The one lead I have for fax machines that work with the ST
  78.  is a firm named Telefax, (thanx to Mark at Atari Canada for that lead)
  79.  but I'm a bit leery of using something that doesn't have local support,
  80.  and this machine is not (to my knowledge) available in Canada. Also, the
  81.  dealer was busy vacuuming when Mark phoned, and asked him to phone back
  82.  later. Doesn't exactly sound like a major corporation....

  84. So the alternative (he said, putting on his asbestos suit) is to put
  85.  a fax card in my new MS-DOS clone, currently used as the world's largest
  86.  EPROM burner. This is attractive because there is a 9600 baud fax card
  87.  for the MS-DOS world, for $275 Cdn. (Frecom FAX96 card, recently reviewed
  88.  in 'The Computer Paper', out of Vancouver). One could then sneakernet
  89.  files between the Atari and the MS-DOS machine. I assume this would
  90.  work for outgoing ASCII files, but it requires that there be some way
  91.  to convert the fax bitmap on receive to something the Atari can show. The image
  92.  card can work with are .TIFF, .PCX or .FAX format.

  96.  Has anyone out there got FAX to work on the Atari (Mega2 in my case)?
  97.  Are there programs to convert from some Atari image format (Degas would
  98.   be convenient) to something a fax can send?

  108.         TRASHDIR and CLIPDIR please tell me how?  I have the setenv
  109.         directives in mupfel.mup e.g. "setenv TRASHDIR 'F:\TRASH'", but
  110.         it still puts trash in C:\GEMINI\TRASHDIR.  hmmm.

  137. Does anyone out there have software to park the heads of a floppy disk?
  138. I need it for a 5.25" add-on disk drive.  Because of the faster step rate
  139. in effect at boot time, if the heads aren't at track 0 the heads don't move,
  140. the computer doesn't sense the track 0 signal, and comes to the conclusion
  141. there is no drive there.  Then, even when the step rate is changed to the
  142. correct value, it's too late.
  143.  
  144. I don't have any documentation on how to write a program to do this or to
  145. tell the computer that the drive is really present.  Any help is appreciated.

  171. What is your (collective) point?  I didn't say this didn't happen in
  172. original TOS (1.0), just that it's not in GEMDOS 0.23!  And it's not.

  174. This is even documented: Rainbow TOS Release Notes, August 7, 1989,
  175. page 37:

  177.         "Attempting to Dcreate a directory with the name of an
  178.         existing file will return EACCDN.  Previously, it would
  179.         delete the file, then create the directory."

  181. What threw me was the original subject line, saying this bug was in
  182. GEMDOS 0.23 (Which is Rainbow TOS's GEMDOS).  It's not there, and it's
  183. documented as a change, and the previous, undesired behavior is also
  184. documented.

  186. If your subsidiary doesn't make the Rainbow TOS Release Notes document
  187. available with TOS 1.4, you should take it up with them.  It's part of
  188. the developer's package in the USA.

  209. For OS-9/68000 which is source code compatible to UNIX(tm) a complete
  210. UUCP/News/Mail implementation exist and works really nice. E.g. I m using
  211. NN to post this message.
